Service Learning

Welcome to the Heritage Academy of Science & Technology Service-Learning Webpage! Here you will find information on service-learning resources and programming. Heritage Academy of Science & Technology is committed to making service-learning a fundamental part of its instruction and learning community where,

• Students are active in communities as partners, leaders, and advocates,
• Learning is experiential, student-centered, academically sound, meaningful, and lifelong.

What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is a method of teaching that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities, and integrating that service with established curricula or learning objectives.

• Picking up trash on a riverbank is service.

• Studying water samples under a microscope is learning.

• When science students collect and analyze water samples, document their results, and present findings to a local pollution control agency – that is service-learning.

Community

Heritage Academy of Science and Technology continually forms meaningful partnerships with schools and organizations locally and nationwide, to rebuild community through service-learning activities.

Professional Development

Heritage Academy of Science and Technology is a proud member of NYLC’s Generator School Network. The Generator School Network is a community of schools committed to best practices in service-learning — and to the vision that high-quality service-learning should be a part of the school experience for every student.
Membership in the GSN helps educators assess and strengthen their service-learning practice, access curricular tools from NYLC, share their experiences and projects, and improve student and community outcomes. Through an easy-to-use online community, the GSN connects K-12 teachers and administrators, giving them voice outside their classrooms and schools while providing them with the materials they need.

Service-Learning Activities
Staff and students will participate in the following service-learning activities with local and national partners.

Service-Learning Energy Audit

Students will learn how to use the energy auditing tools; to find out how much energy and money
things in the school use; come up with data-based suggestions for saving energy to share with
students, teachers, the principal, their families, and others; and to figure out how to move forward.

Students can use their skills to audit local homes; teach younger students the basics of energy efficiency; share their knowledge with local businesses; and change policy in their schools and districts.
